Arizona’s blueprint for success

Because Arizona can’t mess this up if they want to contend…

Just a couple of weeks before the NFL Draft the Arizona Cardinals find themselves in a position of huge doubt. They have the first selection of this year’s draft and people inside the NFL think they’ll select another quarterback for the second year in a row in the first round.

Are they ready to move on from Josh Rosen? Is any of the quarterbacks that have declared for the Draft this year significantly better than the former selection? Is Josh Rosen already considered a bust? Is the new head coach wanting to part ways with old selections? There are way too many questions around the franchise with the worst record of 2018.

The most recent buzz is that Arizona might trade Rosen and select Kyler Murray first overall starting the rebuilding process all over again. The fans tend to imagine a first pick as a savior of the franchise. But a team with so many holes on both sides of the ball could really use some help early in the draft.

We know a player alone can’t win games. They need offensive line help, running game, a good supporting cast and an average defense at least. We also know players face a learning curve in the beginning of their careers. Sometimes the curve is steep and they show huge improvement on year 1. Other times they will need more patience to blossom.

One thing they all will need is support. When you give up on a player and restart the rebuilding process from scratch, it dooms the team to another year of failure. They’ve already got a young quarterback of their choosing, now they need to protect him and give him weapons to work with. Teams that contend every year don’t need to draft quarterbacks every year. They draft players to make the team play better as a whole.

“The first overall pick is so overrated that it can be traded for the 3 first round picks of the Oakland Raiders, for instance. It cannot be wasted on another quarterback.”

Having said that, I believe the Cardinals’ blueprint to contend in the NFC West is trading back with a team desperate for a QB and get as many draft picks as possible. The first overall pick is so overrated that it can be traded for the 3 first round picks of the Oakland Raiders, for instance. It cannot be wasted on another quarterback. The value is too high for a player alone. Three good players could’ve been chosen and help the franchise a lot better.

Assuming Kyler Murray is the next Russell Wilson, both can’t succeed alone and teams should be able to pass up on the idea to draft a phony savior every year. The NFL draft should not be approached as a lottery. But, it is definitely a manageable business.
